I've been on hostgator for a while now. I've had a lot of bad hosts in the past so I'm pretty happy with them. I'm also rather happy with IXWebhosting. When I was with them, my domain was registered with a previous host, bluedomino. Not only was this host awful but when I called them to ask about renewing my domain they insisted that I had to purchase their webhosting (again) in order to do so. So I said fuck that and transferred my domain to IXWebhosting. The few times I've talked to their support staff have been awesome.
Another reason why bluedomino sucked is when they were doing server migrations one time, for some reason they couldn't transfer my site to the new server, so they just canceled my service. Too bad I was stupid and didn't just jump ship right then.5/20/12 2:23pm

Unlike most Hive Fives, this is basically a "which service do you use" poll. Few people have used more than one host in their entire lives, and if it's two, it's usually because they left GoDaddy for something that isn't evil, so it's not like many people have a lot of information to make an honest comparison with.
I'm on Bluehost, and while I like it (24/7 US-based support, commitment to unlimited everything, etc.), I've had plenty of the usual customer complaints with them (downtime, file system rebuilds, customer service snafus).
Honestly, I would only recommend them because they're not GoDaddy, which I used for client sites at an old job and developed an unhealthy hatred for. I don't actually know if Bluehost is better than any of the others on the list, because I don't really have the ability to even try them out unless I commit to change. 5/20/12 6:21pm

I absolutely and positively love Linode. I've been using them for some rather high traffic (around a quarter million pageviews/day) work applications that are embedded in our main sites, and couldn't be happier. Currently for work I have three Linodes (two HTTP + one MySQL) that run like banshees every day all day. Every month we also come pretty damn near the 1.5TB/mo transfer, and Linode never complains.
Previously we had a bit of a mess of different providers, and it was quite slow. Linode? No worries.
I liked it so much that I retired my personal HP DL380 G5 that was sitting on a unused T1, and moved all of it's applications (main shell source) to a Linode.
I can't say enough good about Linode. Seriously, for grown-up webhosting, it's the way to go. 5/21/12 10:41am

I've been with Hostgator for 6 years now and have never had a problem with them...EXCEPT a very strange incident a couple of years ago. I hadn't looked in my domain folders for a while, and when I did, I noticed a folder in there that I hadn't seen before. Inside were a bunch of .html files. When I opened them, it appeared they were unfinished pages from a Russian "incest" porn site - just the text and image placeholders, but no images. I contacted Hostgator and of course they were as surprised as I was, and vowed to get to the bottom of it. I changed my password there and then, deleted the folder and haven't seen anything like it since. I didn't hear back from Hostgator. 5/20/12 1:37pm

I agree with others that a VPS provider should not be put on this list. They're different services.
Now, I've actually been shopping for a VPS, to host a multiplayer server for a mobile game I'm developing, but it's very difficult to get any kind of unbiased reviews for VPSes, and since configuration options are so wide, and pricing for similar levels of service is so variable, it makes it all the harder to pull the trigger.
Perhaps this is something Lifehacker can look into? I'd have a hard time thinking of any other site I'd trust more on the subject.5/20/12 6:24pm

And I wonder why 1and1 isn't on the list... They've been great for me for the past 4 years! I now have about 15 domains with them and at the highest Tier in their hosting...
I've looked over to Bluehost, but the upfront payment simply is a big turn off. I have to pay the first year at the very least to sign up. Or to take advantage of the discounted prices, I have to pay at least the first two years UP FRONT. And that's a lot of money.5/20/12 9:30am

Question for the users of these hosts: Is it hard to implement a database on these sites? I have a dbf file I get from querying my db at work. We need to access that query in rural areas of the county (served by cell phone towers). We can already bring the dbf file with us in Excel but the hosted website might give us super powers for other applications. I should add that I am not a db programmer but only a user. 5/20/12 8:38pm

a month ago, I wrote in to dreamhost asking if I could get an option of a slim install on the "one click" for wordpress. a week later it showed up as an option, and was then a feature item in the company's newsletter.
I don't know what kind of customer service you get where you are, but I get ACTION from dreamhost. 5/21/12 12:49pm

Hostgator is awful for anyone who isn't a webmaster or isn't familiar with web hosting. I am a front-end web developer trying to launch a startup site and all I've gotten is attitude from Hostgator's tech support. So, I'm switching around till I find a web hosting service that has a little more patience with people who don't know the backend inside and out! 5/30/13 5:11pm

Wish I was paying attention to the call for contenders post. I use Nearly Free Speech. They have pay as you go based on you loading up an account with cash. It's not unlike a prepaid cell phone plan. It costs me about a dollar a month because my site doesn't get very many hits. 5/20/12 8:51pm

I'm a manager at A Small Orange, and I'd like to let every one know that we feel truly honored to be included on this list. It is so refreshing to find a grouping of top quality web hosts that is defined by popular opinion.
Nearly every other "Top Web Host" list is just a (not so) clever component of an affiliate marketing program. Often times, these "pay to play" lists have nothing to do with the quality of the vendors they feature, and the "Top Hosts" simply have the highest paying affiliate bounties. 5/21/12 7:31am

I am dancing a jig right now because GoDaddy did NOT make the list of "Best Web Hosting Companies". In my not-so-humble opinion, GoDaddy is one of the WORST companies to work with if you want to go anything more than basic "host a web page". If I cannot run a script to automatically backup my MySQL DBs, it is useless to me. 5/20/12 8:35am

Dreamhost is the pits. It used to be stand-up and reliable around 2003 but thanks to these "Best of" lists, it is now supremely over populated. Good luck running a Wordpress site where you have actual traffic- your site will 500 all the time. Anytime you have any issue whatsoever they push you to use their VPS service which you also share with a bunch of other users. I had to setup some Perl-based resource manager and a crob job to manage the resources that my VPS is using and I still constantly get fake "your server was rebooted" email messages even though it hasn't been restarted. Also, the new Cloudflare integration looked promising until randomly it would throw an error message for my visitors saying that our website was "not configured to accept web traffic". I won't be recommending them again to any clients. The only reason I'm staying is because it's not cost effective for my client to have me move all our domains and subdomains to another service. I've heard good things about Linode before but Small Orange is news to me— I'll check them out.5/21/12 9:11am

Over the years, I've come to appreciate Dreamhost, and can understand why they're number 1 in your poll. With most hosting companies, your site goes down, they're silent, and then it comes-back. You're always "in the dark."
Dreamhost is transparent (to a fault), and openly shares every little "glitch" - They're the same "glitches" every hosting company faces, but while some of us appreciate the granular detail Dreamhost provides, others incorrectly view it as, "Dreamhost talks more about problems than the other hosting companies due, so that must be bad."
I feel sorry for the people who believe, "If they tell me less, they must be a better hosting company."
I'm sticking with Dreamhost. 5/22/12 10:54am

Honestly, all of these but Linode suck. Even Linode sucks for most people (unless they're a Linux guru (most people are not); many Linode customers followed a tutorial on day 1 and haven't updated their OS since).
AppFog is extremely exciting, since it's essentially PHP Fog, but for pretty much everything (namely, NodeJS).
That said, this list extremely depressive. Is this really what people consider the best? If so, our collective standards as web developers needs to be much, much higher.5/20/12 9:14am

Been using Rackspace (mentioned towards the end of the article) for over 4 years now and they do provide excellent service though I'd recommend them only for corporate style hosting - they're not cheap so unless you pay the price, the service rapidly deteriorates - from a customer service point of view.5/20/12 12:37pm

Not too many know or talk about them, but FatCow has served my website needs for years now. They offer up the same packages as all the major competitors, but are dedicated to serving up their services in environmentally friendly solutions. Such as, using 100% wind generated power. This is ultimately why I chose FatCow. I've never had any issues with their service and have never had "downtime" while being with them. They'll even work with you to provide you the same or better price as a competitor...with a little coaxing. :)5/20/12 1:05pm

Linode, my favorite, isn't a peer to the others. The others are commodity, whereas Linode is for people who know how to run a LAMP stack and like having that level of control. That said, it's my second favorite web hosting company, but the context for comparison isn't 1-to-1. 5/20/12 6:03pm

Hole in the wall hosting works fantastically for me.
Normally it's $19/year. Has all the basic fixings and service is super quick. More money for more disk space and bandwidth.
If you use my referral below it's $10/year for 300MB disk space and 30GB monthly bandwidth.

Seriously, dreamhost has so many issues as a shared hosting provider and yet it is currently winning the vote? This really begs to question the validity of this survey or at least of the knowledge of the people taking it.
There should be a disclaimer of "If you have been hosting a website for over 5 years" or something like that. I currently run my own servers because I got tired dealing with things, but I also design sites and deal with what my customers choose all the time. DreamHost throttles your usage way to much. 5/21/12 10:10am

Dreamhost has always been garbage for me. Sure they're cheap, but my server was flaky as all get out. But wait, there's more! I cancelled my hosting account with them and asked them to completely delete my account but they refused to do so, stating it's company policy to leave all accounts open. Are any of these allowing Java/JSP support? It looks like they're all Ruby/PHP. I've been working in a J2EE environment for better than 10 years now, and it would be silly for me to sign up with a host where I couldn't leverage that experience.
I'm aware Linode will let you do whatever you want, but I'm not a Linux user, either.

I have been really happy with Dreamhost. Their customer service is super fast... had an issue last week and it was a bit of back and forth, but they stayed on top of things. They also host their support team here in the US.
There's a code out there for $10 off a yearly plan ($25 off two-years) and a free domain to boot if anyone is interested. Just enter SWEET_ACTION when you signup.5/22/12 10:34am

I'm like Dreamhost if only because of their entertaining monthly newsletters. It's the only newsletter I've not unsubscribed from EVER! 5/20/12 9:35am

I'd vote for hosting your own servers in your basement. That's what I do. I looked into moving to a web hosting company but just couldn't justify the extra cost to get all the features I have now. 5/20/12 9:42am

I don't see AWS mentioned, yet if you use their micro instance it is free. I would be surprised if you can find a hosting provider that has more options and power to grow than AWS, other than DIY. 5/20/12 9:54am

Maybe its me, but every few years even the best host goes sideways and causes you grief.
I have a few words about iPower and they all end with 'cker' oddly enough. 5/20/12 2:00pm

Linode & Drupal for the win. Linode was a good presence at the last Drupalcon and they support the open source community so I hope they win. 5/20/12 2:20pm

I am currently hosted with eleven2, especially their customer service is great. Currently only on a Reseller plan, so I can't say anything about their VPS or Dedicated plans. 5/20/12 4:38pm

I use Dreamhost since 2004 for small things, but not for big sites or anything that I really care about. 5/20/12 4:44pm

I voted for Dreamhost - but I wish I could also make negative votes for bluehost and hostgator. 5/20/12 5:14pm

I used to use Dreamhost, but I hated their custom control panel and their customer support went way downhill. A Small Orange, on the other hand, has always been fantastic for me. 5/20/12 5:21pm

A Small Orange has gotten, is getting and will be getting my business. Never a problem, and ridiculously savvy and quick-to-respond customer service. Glad to see that so many others agree. 5/20/12 8:51pm

I currently use a Dutch webhost, since I prefer a webhost who has its servers in Europe. Plus I am Dutch, so that makes calling support (should I ever need it) a lot cheaper. 5/20/12 10:55pm

May I suggest including Fatcow? They are cheap, favor educational / charity projects, run on so called 'green servers' and have a nice support team. Even though I am living abroad, I keep being a customer of Fatcow!5/21/12 3:04am

I'm using BlueHost now and I hate their CPU Throttling! I'm on a shared server running Joomla/MySQL. The site is almost unusable. I moved it to a LunarPages host and "Voila!", running as it should.5/21/12 8:54am

wow other then Linode and ASO I would not trust anything other then a personal webpage (that I didn't care much about) to any of the hosts on this list. 5/21/12 9:36am

does anyone use the above companies with an installation of Drupal? I've been trying to install it on my current host but can't due to a missing PHP extension that I can't install.5/22/12 1:34pm
